Belmont Wins Best New Condo Development

RLA Architects Inc. is excited to announce that Belmont Residences won the “Best New Condo Development” of the Greater Victoria Area!  Organized by Victoria News Group, 83,000 votes were cast by readers seeking the best things about the Island and we couldn’t be prouder to have designed one of them!

Belmont is a new Master Planned community consisting of commercial, mixed-use and multi-family residential buildings.  RLA has continued its strong relationship with the Belmont team, working to further develop the residential portion of the master plan while designing 4 buildings, 2 of which have commercial ground floors and 3 of which are currently under construction.

The designs mix contemporary forms with traditional ones on varying buildings. The Crossing buildings utilize warm wood on the corners to accen picking up on the West Coast style using wood to highlight. The Crossing buildings more contemporary forms use a commercial base that is strongly pronounced with the use of light stone and large overhangs, announcing stores and restaurant entrances (image below).

As seen from the plaza, the goal was to create a warm and inviting space for the community to congregate, shopping locally while engaging with their neighbours.

Wood is used to accent the corner of the buildings, to soften the overall contemporary form of the buildings while also referencing the West Coast and our long history of using wood in our buildings.

Lastly, Belmont Residences East picks up on the use of wood, similar to that of its sister West building.  Here, sloped roofs are matched with flat roofs mixing modern and traditional forms.  The buildings anticipated lush foliage and outdoor patio space back onto the Galloping Goose Trail, a major amenity in the greater Victoria area and common commuter trail to downtown Victoria.
